1872 – 43rd – Embarked at Queenstown and sailed for Cannanore East Indies.
43rd Depot was left in Cork attached to 2nd Bn 7th Royal Fusiliers.

0600 - “CZAR” moved out into midstream opposite Archangel Friestan.
1030 - “D” Coy. embarked by tug from Archangel Friestan, having had to march there from Bakharitza owing to the Russian train service having petered out.
1500 - General Grogan and White (B.M.) embarked by tug.
Accommodation adjusted and all companies are now fairly comfortable.
While lying in midstream we passed by several tugs conveying S. Jackson’s Brigade.
This Brigade goes by tug from “LYAVLA” passed Archangel right down to the river mouth and embark there in Transports. Acted as a sort of rearguard to the force.
“CZAR” started steaming downstream to the White Sea.
Orders issued for troops to remain between decks from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. but no trouble was experienced.

The transport and carriers, under Major Colvill, left for embarkation.
On the same day Major Bailie took an advance party to Ramillies Barracks, Aldershot, whither the Regiment moved on the 29th September.

Major C. A. S. Hinton rejoined the Regiment to assume command of "A" Company vice Captain F. J. B. Taylor.

1914 – 7th (S)Bn OXF & BUCKS LI - formed at Oxford and moved to camp at Codford St. Mary (Wilts).
 
1914 – 2nd BUCKS Bn officially recognised as separate unit (2/1 BUCKS).

 “CZAR” came in at 4 p.m. Regiment less “D” Coy. and 239 T.M.B. embarked at 5.30 p.m. All baggage on board by 8 p.m.
Ship is full of Naval ranks and ratings and accommodation allotted to the Regiment is absurdly small and sufficient for 400 men. Adjustments being made.
Most of the men sleep on deck for the night.
Each man has four blankets but owing to lack of space, kits had to be put in the hold.
Heard we are going all the way in the “CZAR” not putting in at MURMANSK.
“D” Coy. remained on shore and took up positions all round the Bakharitza compound to cover the withdrawal. They are to embark by tug from Archangel Friestan early tomorrow. Officers Guard posted over the Gangways of the “CZAR” from 6 p.m. by orders of General Grogan.

On the 26th September the G.O.C. 48th Division, Major-General F. G. Roberts, V.C., D.S.O., O.B.E., paid a short visit to the Battalion and inspected H.Q. and A Companies' billets.

During the evening the withdrawal takes place under heavy German fire.
Boats of the British and Canadian engineers ferry about 2500 men across the Rhine.
'Market-Garden' is over.

Lieut. K. J. Smith completed a Messing Officers' Course.

1806 – 52nd – 1st Bn 52nd left Plymouth for service in Sicily where it remained until 1808.
 
1915 - 2nd Bn OXF & BUCKS LI – BATTLE OF LOOS; attack made by 2nd Bn OXF & BUCKS LI at Givenchy  (casualties, 9 Officers and 226 men);
 
1915 - 5th Bn OXF & BUCKS LI - attacked Bellewarde Farm, Ypres
(casualties, 13 Officers and 463 men).
 
1919 –1st Bn, OXF & BUCKS LI – NORTH RUSSIA.
28 officers & batmen embarked on Braemar Castle for U.K.
Ferry bringing Booth back from Archangel to Bakharitza was sunk in mid stream by Tug “Roysterer”. Booth hung onto the rudder of the Roysterer and stayed there, in spite of having a Russian clinging to his neck, until picked up by the Cyclops. Returned to camp in the afternoon quite alright.
Heavy kit moved down to the quay by lorry and stacked in a shed.
Since arriving at BAKHARITZA Regiment has been paid out, £10 per officer, £3 per W.O. and £2 per other rank.
Everything ready for embarkation.
Large Fatigue parties have to be found daily to finish loading ships sailing for U.K.
About 50 men are on Guard day and night. Russians mounted guard in conjunction with us from 24th. Very jumpy and have orders to fire at anything moving after 8 p.m.
Our men ordered to remain in doors after 8 p.m.

The situation has become hopeless.
A mere eleven percent of the supplies dropped by the Royal Air Force has fallen within the perimeter.
The troops are exhausted by lack of food, water and sleep. There is very little ammunition.
The crossing of the Polish Parachute Brigade which had dropped near Driel has become a failure dew to a shortage of boats. Only about 350 men reach Oosterbeek.
The attack by the 4th Battalion of the Dorset Regiment on Westerbouwing heights during the night of 25th September ends in disaster.
The following evening the withdrawal takes place under heavy German fire.

Lieut General Sir John Harding, K.C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., Commanding 13 Corps, visited the Regiment.

2nd Lieut. K. J. Smith and 2nd Lieut. C. E. W. Jones took part as umpires in Exercise Kestrel, a beach-landing exercise carried out by the Royal Berkshire Regiment.

Captain R. M. Colvile rejoined the Regiment and was posted to Headquarter Company.
2nd Lieut. R. M. Formby left the Regiment for National Service Release.

The barracks was inspected by the District Hygiene Representative.

A detachment from "C" Company commanded by Captain N. W, Gibson took part in a parade in honour of the Sultan of Brunei's Birthday.

1918 - 7th Bn OXF & BUCKS LI - After night march through mountains, entered BULGARIA.

Carried on with bathing and fumigating blankets etc.
General Grogan visited the camp and went round the company bungalows.
Owing to the fact that our ordnance had been handed over to the Russians it has not been possible to re-equip the men.
The whole regiment with the exceptions of “D” Coy. are in a bad way as regards clothes. After going through their kit bags each man is now in possession of a serviceable suit much more might have been done if clothing had been available. Caps are bad and men are still deficient of putties.
Several detached for duty with M.F.F. returned on 23rd & 24th

A football match took place against 3 Royal Horse Artillery. Result, lost 4—1.
A hockey match took place against 1 Som. L.I. Result, lost 3—1.

1960 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) –KNOOK CAMP, WARMINSTER.
The C.I.G.S., Field Marshal Sir Francis Festing, G.C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., visited the Regiment informally.
After inspecting a quarter guard found by H.Q. Company, he lunched in the officers' mess.
In the afternoon he walked round barracks visiting the Basic N.C.O's and W.T. Courses, the Gurkha band and band lines.
He was accompanied by his Military Assistant.
 
1965 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) – MONTGOMERY BKS, BERLIN.
The Rt. Hon. Fred Mulley, M.P., Secretary of State for War, visited the Regiment and lunched with the officers.
Major M. M. V. W. Beak joined the Regiment from 2nd The Royal Green Jackets.

1790 – 52nd – formed part of the army which entered Paulighautcherry after 12 days siege. Killed 1 Serjeant. Wounded 1 Officer and 3 men.

Three parties from the Regiment were sent out to help suppress "Feis" and Meetings of Sinn Feiners. Stones were thrown at one of the parties, and a man of the Regiment was hit and seriously injured. (For this he eventually received £160 compensation.)

Major General Woods, a.d.m.s., visited the Regiment.
A guard was mounted by HQ Company for the occasion.
Captain A. H. Morley rejoined the Regiment and was posted to H.Q. Company as PRI and messing officer.

Captain T. M. Hartley left the Regiment on posting to the Ministry of Defence.

1777 – 52nd – American War of Independence - The light Company of the 52nd with a small force under Major General Grey, at night surprised and defeated 1,500 Americans with 4 guns (artillery).

The Regiment provided a party of 3 officers and 50 soldiers for the Battle of Britain Sunday church parade.
It was com­manded by Major P. J. Durant, m.b.e.
The Regiment was presented with a bugle major's mace by the Bicester Urban District Council.
A guard for the occasion was commanded by Major R. M. Colvile and the Regimental colour was carried by Lieut. J. P. Watts.
The Colonel Commandant accepted the mace on behalf of the Regiment.
 
1962 - 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) – MINDEN BKS, PENANG, MALAYA.
"C" Company left for classification camp at Taiping,
 
1963 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) –BRUNEI.
"C" Company returned with the Band from Sandakan.

​On this day 19th September
 
1857 – 52nd – during the engagements with mutineers from August 14th to September 20th the 52nd lost 1 Officer, 1 Serjeant and 25 men killed. 3 Officers and 82 men wounded.
98 men died of cholera and other diseases.
 
1915 - 8th (S) Bn OXF & BUCKS LI - arrived at Havre from England.
 
1919 –1st Bn, OXF & BUCKS LI – NORTH RUSSIA.
Sisko disembarked 2 3-inch guns early in the morning and handed them over to the Russian Authorities.
Continued journey and passed UST PINEGA in the afternoon.
(Note two entries for 16th when we withdrew the Russians were holding BERESNIK which had been our base for Dvina and Vaga Forces. When we arrived at Archangel we heard that they had arrived at MORJEGGORSKAY and were holding that place. Up to the time we embarked we got no further news of them)

Colonel E. G. B. Davies-Scourfield,m.b.e., m.c., the Brigade Colonel, The Green Jackets Brigade, arrived for a short visit to the Regiment.

Remained tied up until the afternoon then continued journey and arrived at SISKOE just before dark.

1759 - 43rd - Quebec surrendered - 43rd formed part of the garrison of occupation.
 
1828 – 43rd – Terrible epidemic broke out in the 43rd at Gibraltar.

Continued journey.
Passed EMETSKOE and got hung up on the Emtsa bar, where most of the convoy had stuck. Crossed the bar and tied up downstream to wait for the other ships.
One 3-inch gun and a platoon of “A” Coy. were sent off to engage the bolos who had come down to the mouth of the Vaga and were firing at Divna force barges.
These men returned at 1730 and the Convoy started at 1800 hrs.

March was carried out by the river road.
Several places had to be improved before the guns and transport could get across.
About halfway news was received that the Bolos had entered UST VAGA.

1939 – 4th (TA) Bn OXF & BUCKS LI – OXFORD - NEWBURY
The Battalion left its peace station on the 14th September at 0800 hrs. and moved to the concentration area south of Newbury.
The distribution of the Battalion in the area was;
Battalion Headquarters and H.Q. Company: Burley House, a large empty house with plenty of out-buildings.
A Company: Harwood Stud Farm.
B Company: Woolton House.
C Company: Battledene Wash Common (nearly three miles from Battalion headquarters).
D Company: Tile Barn.
All the houses except Battledene were in Woolton Hill village and by midday all were settled in, and work was started on improvements to the accommodation which was much handi­capped by the total absence of R.E. stores.
Before the Battalion left Oxford all duties, such as the guard at divisional headquarters, were taken over by the 5th Battalion.

Battalion met on arrival at Oxford Station by General Paget and representative officers.

On the anniversary of the Storming of the Cashmere Gate, a Tattoo, organized by Captain W. S. C. Chevis, was held on the Sports Track.
There was a special luncheon with free beer and the day was a holiday.

The Regiment played 30 Signals Regiment at football and won 4—2.

The Regiment arrived home again.

Colonel Scott, U.S. Army, visited the Regiment.
 
1963 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) –BRUNEI.
Two patrols of the recce platoon, led by Sjt Hickmott and Cpl Sanders reported that they were unable to reach their R.V. at Lepu Leju on the Sungei Baram and that both patrols were out of rations.
A successful airdrop was made to Cpl Sanders but Sjt Hickmott's patrol was not located.

0230 - Large bolo patrols reported round MALA BERESNIK and some enemy creeping round wire W of the Pimple.
Fire opened with M.G’s & T.M’s into the forest and groans and shrieks heard.
0630 - Bolo commenced shelling MALA BERESNIK with one battery 3-inch guns and continued till 1800 hrs.
 During the day number of bolos were seen from Hale’s post left bank to be moving towards NIJNI KITSA these seen later by NINJI KITSA and 3 knocked over by M.G’s.
1815 - 125 bolos (1 Coy of 161st Regt.) surrendered at N. KITSA Bolos plan was to attack MALA BERESNIK with 2 Bns. Of 160th Regt. and NINJI KITSA with 2 Bns. 161st Regt. Both attacks fell through.

By the 13th September the full scale of anti-tank rifles had arrived and the carrier platoon had now three carriers.
Transport was still very short, and it was necessary to order back the trucks which had taken the advanced party to the concentration area in order to convey the cooks when the Battalion finally moved on the 14th September.

The Regiment took over the duties of the Nicosia Area Reserve battalion and was almost entirely committed on guards and escort duties.

The Regiment left Otterburn Camp on a Regimental Road Movement Exercise.

1918 - 2/4th Bn OXF & BUCKS LI - Cpl. W. Wilcox, near Laventie, gained the V.C.
[ London Gazette, 15 November 1918 ], near Laventie, France, 12 September 1918, Lance Corporal Alfred Wilcox, 2/4th Bn, Oxforshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
For most conspicuous bravery and initiative in attack (near Laventie, France) when his company was held up by heavy and persistent machine-gun fire at close range. On his own initiative, with four men he rushed ahead to the nearest enemy gun, bombed it, killed the gunner, and put the gun out of action.
Being then attacked by an enemy bombing party, Cpl. Wilcox picked up enemy bombs and led his party against the next gun, finally capturing and destroying it. Although left with only one man, he continued bombing and captured a third gun. He again bombed up the trench, captured a fourth gun, and then rejoined his platoon.
Cpl. Wilcox displayed in this series of successful individual enterprises exceptional valour, judgment, and initiative.
 
Alfred Wilcox was invested with his Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on the 26th November 1918.

2nd Lieut. E. C. Simmons proceeded on leave prior to attending Course at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, on 22.9.19 (6 weeks' course).

Meanwhile, fitting of equipment and promotions were com­pleted by the 10th.
Most of the men had never fired the Bren gun, and firing of this weapon and rifles was carried out.
We also did some sweltering route marches and completely spoiled a farmer's field by some night digging.

His Excellency the Governor of Cyprus, Field Marshal Sir John Harding, G.C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., visited the Regiment.

Regimental Exercise Marshmallow. R.H.Q. was set up in Harbottle Castle, the ancestral home of the Commanding Officer.
The Exercise lasted twenty-four hours with A, B and the Gurkha Com­panies mounting an attack and carrying out patrolling activities.

The Regiment was visited by the Director of Operations Major-General W. C. Walker, C.B.E., D.S.O.

Lieut.-Colonel P. G. F. Young, Major G. N. Astley-Cooper, Major H. J. Sweeney, Captain W. S. C. Chevis, Captain C. A. S. Hinton and a skeleton Regimental Headquarter went out on a four-day divisional exercise 'Preliminary Canter' in the area of Bir Odieb on the Gulf of Suez.

Letter 'A' Company were called out to take part in a 48 hour operation near Kyrenia following a terrorist raid on a police station.

During the evening a large bomb exploded in the NAAFI Families Shop in Berengaria Village, and caused a fire which gutted the shop.

The Regiment won the Army Swimming Championship held at Eltham Baths, London, defeating 3rd Bn, Parachute Regiment by two points.

This involved everyone standing still while sounds of our fighters were heard.

Three patrols of the recce platoon led by Captain Letts, Sjt Hickmott and Cpl Sanders flew to Long Akah to operate in the Indonesian Border area.

Fire at "Douglas" Mills, near Cork; about 60 men of the Regiment proceeded promptly to the scene of the fire, which had already destroyed practically the entire mills; £20 sent to the Commanding Officer by the owner of Mills in recognition of services rendered; this was divided amongst the men, who received the sum of 6s. 8d. each.

1330 - Routine boat arrived with Staff Officer from DVINA and a Signalling Officer.
1030 - 2 3-inch guns arrived from MALA BERESNIK from TROITSA.
Practice barrage put down in front of MALA B at 1815 hrs.
Not a great success. One premature (no damage).

Lieut. J. Burns for dispersal.
Lieut. Holiday took over duties of Ammunition Officer.
 
1920 – A Series of Army Numbers (from 5373001 to 542900) to replace Regimental Numbers. (Army Order 338 of August 1920)
 
1939 – 4th (TA) Bn OXF & BUCKS LI – OXFORD.
By the morning of the 4th September thirty-four officers and six hundred and ten other ranks had reported. The whole of the embodiment had worked very smoothly, thanks to the practices which had been held in the previous years, when the company staffs had gone through the whole procedure.
It is interesting to note that there were present on this occasion four of those who had mobilized with the Battalion in August, 1914: Bandmaster W. J. Liebermann, M.M., C.S.M. W. Beal, Serjeant W. L. Liebermann and Bandsman C. E. Liebermann. In addition to the Liebermann family there were two nephews serving, Bandsmen N. and R. Liebermann, thus again bringing up to five the number of members of this family with the Battalion, as in 1914.
 
1949 – 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) – SOBRAON BKS, SALONIKA.
The Regimental cricket team de­feated the Brigade Workshops by 3 wickets.
 
1956 – 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) - CYPRUS
Letter 'B' Company moved into the Regiment's new camp—Oxford Camp, Kermia.
 
1957 - 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) – CYPRUS.
Letter ‘B’ Company started a three-day operation to keep an area near Lania under surveillance.
 
1958 - 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) – CYPRUS.
An EOKA courier was arrested by Letter ‘B’ Company.
 
1959 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) – JELLALABAD BKS, TIDWORTH
Junior Leaders Course No. 3 was completed.
Fourteen Rfn were passed out and were promoted Local L.-Cpls.
 
1964 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) – BORNEO.

N.B. Russian troops on Dvina and Vaga have gone back to take up a line at NIKOLSKAYA about 15 Versts S of EMETSKOE.

Major H. L. Wood took over his own Company (D). Lieut. G. P. B. de Pass, on arrival, was attached to A Com­pany, and Lieut. J. Burns to C Company.

1939 – Great Britain declares war on Germany.
 
1939 – 4th (TA) Bn OXF & BUCKS LI – OXFORD.
By 0900 hrs. on the 3rd September thirty officers and five hundred and sixty-six other ranks had reported. The out­lying detachments at Kidmore End, Thame and Dorchester had joined their respective companies, B, C and D.
On the afternoon of the 3rd September the colours of the Battalion were handed over to the safe keeping of the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and were eventually hung on a pillar in the Regimental Chapel, not far from the pillar on which they were hung during the First World War, 1914-18. The colour party on this occasion consisted of Second Lieutenants J. A. R. Forster and H. C. S. T. Barrett, Serjeants H Simms and R. Wiley and Lance-Serjeant C. Sammons. An escort of fifty rank and file, under the command of Captain M. C. Wiggins, with the band and buglers, was provided by H.Q. and D Companies.
 
1946 – 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI – AUSTRIA.
Advance party arrived at Treviso.
 
1947 – 2nd Bn OXF & BUCKS LI – EGYPT - UK
Battalion leaves BTD Suez and embarks at Port Said on HMT Clan Lamont.
On September 3rd, 1947, the battalion now reduced to 6 officers, 2 WOIIs and 88 ORs embarked on the HMT Clan Lamont, a converted cargo boat of some 10,000 tons.
 
1949 – 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) – SOBRAON BKS, SALONIKA.
Carrier Platoon moved to Khortiatis camp in their new Oxford Carriers.
Much interest shown in these new fighting vehicles.
Mortar Platoon returned to barracks from camp.
 
1956 – 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) - CYPRUS
Lieut. B. W. Balls was granted the temporary rank of Captain.
2nd Lieut. R. W. S. Ball rejoined the Regiment from a course in England.
A draft of 10 other ranks arrived.
 
1958 - 1st Bn OXF & BUCKS LI (43rd & 52nd) – CYPRUS.
Letter ‘A’ Company assisted 34 L.A.A. Regiment R.A. in an operation at Monagroulli. Seven men were arrested.
 
1959 – 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) – JELLALABAD BKS, TIDWORTH
A football match versus 27 Command Workshops R.E.M.E. was won 15—0.
2nd Lieut. R. P. Radcliffe was appointed officer i/c cycling.
 
1962 - 1st GREEN JACKETS (43rd & 52nd) – MINDEN BKS, PENANG, MALAYA.
Lieut.-Colonel H. J. Sweeney, m.c., reassumed command of the Regiment.
