1811 – 43rd & 52nd - Battle of Fuentes d'Onor (Peninsula) 1944 – 6th Oxf & Bucks LI attack THAYGONBAUNG (Battalions first attack) (5th/6th May) 1945 – 1st Bn Oxf & Bucks LI – Germany. Lieutenant-Colonel F. H. Howard, M.C., re-assumed command of the Regiment on return from leave. 1945 - 2nd (Airborne) Bn Oxf & Bucks LI - Bad Kleinen The remainder of 'A' Coy have been sent back to reinforce the platoon at WITTENBERG where a P.W. cage has been formed. One platoon of 'B' Coy and one of 'C' Coy are now billeted in the game keepers lodge in the woods south of the village. They are responsible for the control of the civilians camped in this area - estimated at about 10,000. On this day 4th May
1811 - Light Division - on the River Duas Casas, near Fuentes d'Onor. (Peninsula). 1945 – 1st Bn Oxf & Bucks LI – Germany. At 0530 hrs. the Regiment left Willinghusen (6354) and moved through Barsbuttel (6055) into Hamburg (5055). As the city had surrendered unconditionally on the previous day, there was no opposition. The streets were entirely deserted and all civilians had been ordered to remain in their houses. The Regiment arrived without incident in its area in the neighbourhood of the Stadpark (5158) and the remainder of the day was spent in finding billets, having road-blocks removed by civilians, patrolling the area and locating vital points and camps of displaced people and prisoners. A Company moved initially into flats at the corner of Jarrestrasse and Saarland Strasse (524573) and later into the municipal buildings in Vozzberg Strasse (509576). B Company moved into pleasant villas in Maria Louisen Strasse (507577). C Company went into a well-appointed warehouse, the property of the Hamburg City Railway Company. D Company occupied a block of flats at the corner of Jarrestrasse and Jollasse Steig. S Company moved into the school buildings at the corner of Grasweg and Vossberg Strasse. Regimental headquarters were established in the ground floor of the Red Cross buildings in the Schlageter Ring. 1945 - 2nd (Airborne) Bn Oxf & Bucks LI - Bad Kleinen During the day the flow of prisoners & civilians continued. Gradually the marching prisoners were sent back. German hospitals were organised for the more seriously wounded & for the civilians. When not required for guards & escorts the members of the Regiment had an opportunity for rest. On this day 3rd May
1873 – 52nd – Left Malta for Gibraltar on H.M.S Tamar. 1917 - 5th Bn Oxf & Bucks LI - heavily engaged Third battle of the Scarpe (Arras) - Attack on Hillside Work. (VIS-EN-ARTOIS.) (Total Casualties.—8 officers and 291 N.C.O.'s and Men, out of 12 officers2 and 523 N.C.O.'s and Men who went into action.) 1919 - 2nd Bn Oxf & Bucks LI – Germany. The Cadre of the Regiment this day appeared in its final stage, viz. :—a very small Headquarters and one Company, the latter commanded by Captain E. H. Whitfeld, M.C. (with C.-S.-M. Lay, M.M., and C.-Q.-M.-S. Parkinson). Every endeavour was made to keep up the semblance of the organization as a Regiment, in order that every one should understand that there was no question of the Regiment being broken up to start again, but that it was merely passing through a stage in the coming period of reconstruction. It was impressed upon the Cadre personnel that the future of the Regiment depended on them, as to them new-comers and recruits would turn for example, because they had been with the Regiment continuously or nearly so. 1945 – 1st Bn Oxf & Bucks LI – Germany. The Regiment left Quarrendorf (5322) at 1140 hrs. in troop-carrying vehicles and moved through Brackel (5425), Pattensen (6027), Wittorf (7529), St. Diongs (7729) and over the River Elbe on the class 9 bridge at Tespe (777382) to Geesthacht (7540), which was reached at 1340 hrs. The Regiment waited here until the evening while negotiations for the surrender of Hamburg were in progress. At 1845 hrs., on the city's surrender, the Regiment left Geesthacht and moved through Bergedorf (6446), Schonningsted (6751) and Stemwarde (6655) to Willinghusen (6354), where it was ordered to spend the night before entering Hamburg at dawn on the following day. 1945 - 2nd (Airborne) Bn Oxf & Bucks LI Lutterstorf. Sheet 1/100,000. No.K.6. MR 4089. Eventually in the early hours of the morning we found our advance parties & billeted ourselves in the area of LUTTERSTORF. Everybody was by this time feeling the effects of three consecutive night-moves & had great difficulty in keeping awake. Bad Kleinen 4681 After breakfast we moved off again to BAD KLEINEN. The Parachutists having met the Russians at WISMAR there is now no more fighting to be done. However, there was no immediate rest for everybody owing to the hordes of Germans. Throughout the day the better part of two German divisions came in. Some had been marching many days & could go no further. Many were wounded, some came from hospitals & convalescent companies. In addition to the WEHRMACHT there were long processions of German civilians mostly travelling on large horse-drawn waggons. We were therefore called upon to provide guards and escorts both for the prisoners & for the civilians who could not be allowed to proceed further west where they would have clogged the lines of communication. On this day 2nd May
1811 - Light Division - fell back from Gallegos towards the plains of Fuentes d'Onor. (Peninsula). 1945 - 2nd (Airborne) Bn Oxf & Bucks LI - Nostorf 9438 Germany Schwartow 1037 At 0200 hrs we left NOSTORF by march route. A Coy leading. The way lay mostly along very rough & unreconnoitred tracks. At a point just west of the railway at 984388 the leading vehicles became bogged. The Regiment therefore went on without its transport and arrived at SCHWARTOW at dawn. No opposition was encountered. Meanwhile Maj. Edmunds & Maj. Everett reassembled the vehicles and led them down harder tracks to BOLZENBURG (9835) and thus up again to rejoin the Regiment. There was clearly no enemy anywhere near us and the Parachute Brigades started off in transport along the main road northwards in the early morning. The 52nd had time for a short rest and a hot meal, but in the afternoon we were ordered to follow on behind the parachutists. This we did by means of our own unit & captured transport. On the roads we passed through crowds of liberated allied P.O.W. and later on became involved in the streams of German troops walking & riding back along the main axis. The Wehrmacht was clearly surrendering en masse, & nobody had much time to deal with them. One platoon of A Coy was dropped off at WITTENBURG (2251) to start organising a temporary P.W. camp. Owing to the crowded roads, the uncertainty as to the positions of the troops in front of us and the darkness of the night, the progress of the column became very slow. On this day 1st May
1885 - 43rd - left wing reached Quetta (Baluchistan). 1919 - 2nd Bn Oxf & Bucks LI – Germany. A certain amount of uneasiness at the continued delay in our move home from Gohr began to be apparent, and there did not seem to be any reason for the delay. Life was monotonous, and it was difficult to maintain profitable employment and amusement for every one. Moreover, the heat was becoming trying, and exercise had to be taken principally in the evening. 1945 – 1st Bn Oxf & Bucks LI – Germany NWE The Regiment left Gyhurn (0515) at 1340 hrs. in troop-carrying vehicles and moved along the Reichsautobahn to the cross-roads at 316311, thence through Tostedt (3122), Trelde (3726), Liillau (4523), Jesteburg (4825) and Hanstedt (5220) to Quarrendorf (5322), which was reached at 1640 hrs. and where the Regiment moved into comfortable farmhouses before crossing the River Elbe. 1945 - 2nd (Airborne) Bn Oxf & Bucks LI - Nostorf 9438 Germany D Coy in the lead, the Regiment marched unopposed via BUKHAUSEN to NOSTORF, arriving at about 0400 hrs. 196 P.O.W. came in during the day, or were rounded up in the neighbouring farms & woods. here to edit. |
